What You Actually Need To Finalize Your Divorce

Many people expect working with a lawyer to feel stressful, expensive, or overly complicated. We do things differently. Our goal is to make sure you understand your options and the process from start to finish before signing a legal services agreement. Right from our free consult call we make your separation easier to navigate, and far less intimidating than most people expect.

What you need to complete your divorce:

1

A separation agreement; this outlines how you will be handling splitting of assets and debts, child support, spousal support and more. If you have a marriage contract this typically mirrors your agreement except for certain changes in your situation.

2

Filing your divorce papers; this is how your divorce is legally dissolved. Once this is completed you are free to marry again.

3

Financial disclosure; this is the financial snapshot of your situations from the date of marriage to the date of separation. Splitting this depends on your prenup, the Family Law Act and what you two have agreed to.

Options For Your Divorce

1. No-conflict separation

You and your ex are 100% on the same page, and all you need is a legally signed separation agreement.

Conflict Level

2. Some-conflict separation

You and your ex are roughly on the same page but you need help with negotiations. Using an accredited mediation lawyer is a great option for this situation.

Conflict Level

2. High-conflict divorce

If you are not on speaking terms or if there is serious criminal charges involved these are usually high conflict situations. This can sometimes go through mediation, but often needs traditional courts to complete these.

When you work with Angrove Law, you get a dedicated divorce lawyer who answers questions clearly and keeps the process flowing so your costs stay low.

Myths about divorce

Divorce lawyers are expensive. Yes many lawyers are expensive when they are setup to represent each party, they get more billable hours the more arguing there is. Luckily most divorces do not need to go down this route.

Assets are divided based on whose name is on the account. No, your assets are pooled together and divided in accordance to your prenuptial agreement and the terms you both agree to within your separation agreement.

Divorce ruins children permanently. Studies show that children are better with low-conflict parenting. That means staying in a marriage with lots of fighting creates worse outcomes than those who split and can co-parent amicably.

Divorce is always a brutal courtroom battle. Most separations do not need to go through the expensive courtroom litigation. Many can be done by negotiating together or through a mediation.
