Ontario Child Support Calculator

Estimate the monthly base table amount under the Federal Child Support Guidelines, using the current Ontario table.

Number of children

Estimated monthly table amount

$0

  • This is the base table amount only. Section 7 special or extraordinary expenses (childcare, medical and dental costs, post secondary education, and some extracurricular activities) are added on top and shared by the parents in proportion to their incomes.
  • Shared custody changes the calculation. If each parent has the children at least 40 percent of the time, the court can depart from the straight table amount and will usually look at both parents’ incomes.
  • For 4 or more children this tool uses the four child column. The official table has higher amounts for five or more children.

This tool uses the current 2025 Federal Child Support Tables for Ontario, in force since October 1, 2025. Many calculators online still use the outdated 2017 tables, which can give a different number.

Child support is rarely just the table amount.

Child Support FAQ

How is child support calculated in Ontario?
The base amount comes from the Federal Child Support Tables. It depends on just two things: the paying parent’s annual gross income and the number of children. Section 7 special or extraordinary expenses, such as childcare, health costs, post secondary education and some activities, are added on top and shared in proportion to each parent’s income. Shared custody, undue hardship and income over $150,000 can all change the final number. Our family lawyers in Ontario can tell you which of those apply to your situation.
When does child support end?
Not automatically at 18. Support usually continues while a child remains a dependant, which often includes full time attendance at college or university, or where a child cannot become self supporting because of illness or disability. Support does not simply stop on a birthday; the order or agreement usually has to be changed or the parents have to agree it has ended.
Is child support taxable?
No. For orders and agreements made after April 1997, child support is not taxable income for the parent who receives it and is not tax deductible for the parent who pays it. This is different from spousal support, which is generally taxable and deductible when paid periodically under a written agreement or order.
What if the payor is self-employed?
The table income is not always the number on the tax return. For a self-employed parent, courts can add back personal benefits run through the business, such as a vehicle, phone or travel, and can look at pre tax corporate income. If income is being hidden or artificially reduced, the court can impute income, meaning it assigns a higher income for support purposes. This is one of the most common areas of dispute.
What is shared custody for child support?
If each parent has the children at least 40 percent of the time over the year, section 9 of the Federal Child Support Guidelines applies. The court looks at both parents’ table amounts, the increased costs of shared parenting time and each family’s circumstances. Many people expect a simple setoff of the two table amounts, but the court is not required to calculate it that way.
